1. Contempt case: SC order on quantum of sentence to Vijay Mallya today  The Supreme Court is scheduled to pronounce on July 11 its order on the quantum of sentence against fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya, accused in a bank loan default case of over ₹9,000 crores involving his defunct Kingfisher Airlines, in a contempt case where he has been found guilty. As per the cause list of July 11 uploaded on the apex court website, a bench headed by Justice U.U. Lalit would pronounce the order. 2. Sri Lankan parties to meet today to discuss convening of the House for transition of power Sri Lanka's main Opposition parties on Sunday agreed to form an all-party interim government after the anticipated resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on Wednesday, following unprecedented political turmoil that forced him and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to offer their resignations over the mishandling of the nation's crippling economic crisis. The leaders of political parties represented in Parliament are to meet today afternoon to discuss the convening of the House for the transition of power for a new government after Mr. Rajapaksa said he will resign. 3. Uddhav to convene meeting of party MPs today to discuss presidential polls  Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray has called a meeting of the party MPs to take a decision on the next week's presidential election. Talking to PTI on Sunday, Vinayak Raut, Sena MP from Sindhudurg, said the meeting will be held at 12 noon. "The agenda is to discuss the party's stand on the presidential election slated to be held on July 18," he said. 4. SC to hear plea alleging attacks on Christian institutions, priests today The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear a plea alleging a rising number of attacks on Christian institutions and priests across the country and seeking the implementation of its guidelines to curb hate crimes. A bench of justices D.Y. Chandrachud and A.S. . Bopanna is likely to hear the matter. Senior advocate Colin Gonsalves had mentioned the matter before a vacation bench in June and said on an average, 45 to 50 violent attacks take place against Christian institutions and priests across the country every month. 5. Madras HC to pass order on AIADMK GC meeting at 9 a.m. today  The suspense over the conduct of the AIADMK general council meeting scheduled to be held at 10 a.m. today will continue till the last moment as the Madras High Court on Friday decided to pronounce its verdict just an hour before the commencement of the meeting. Justice Krishnan Ramasamy decided to deliver orders at 9 a.m. after hearing senior counsel Vijay Narayan, S.R. Rajagopal and Narmadha Sampath for party leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami and senior counsel Guru Krishnakumar and A.K. Sriram for former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam and general council member P. Vairamuthu respectively. 6. All set for big-ticket AIADMK meet to pick Palaniswami as supremo An imposing fort-like facade with huge-sized images of a smiling Edappadi K. Palaniswami, the super-influential leader of the main Opposition AIADMK, is striking for its symbolism at the venue of the big ticket party event. The event, expected to be held is the party's 'historic' general council and executive committee meeting today to elect Palaniswami as the single, supreme party leader, with O. Panneerselvam now clearly relegated to the background. 7. Maharashtra rains: Red, orange alerts issued for Vidarbha districts  The India Meteorological Department on Sunday issued red and orange alerts for rainfall ranging from extremely heavy to heavy in several districts of Maharashtra's Vidarbha region over the next three days. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Nagpur issued a red alert and said extremely heavy rainfall with heavy to very heavy rainfall was very likely in isolated places in Chandrapur and Gadchiroli on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. 8. Bhima Koregaon case: SC to hear Varavara Rao's permanent medical bail plea today  The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear a plea filed by Telugu poet and an accused in the Bhima Koregaon-Elgar Parishad case, P. Varavara Rao, challenging a Bombay High Court order that rejected his prayer for permanent medical bail in the matter today. A three-judge bench of justices U.U. Lalit, S. Ravindra Bhat and Sudhanshu Dhulia is likely to take up the matter. 9. Government to hold national apprenticeship fair at 200 locations today The Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Ministry has said it will organise a national apprenticeship fair today as part of the Prime Minister's Skill India Mission to ensure career opportunities and practical training for the country's youth. The one-day event will be conducted at 200 locations across the country. 10. Rain: Telangana declares holidays for educational institutions for 3 days Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao on Sunday declared three days of holiday for educational institutions from July 11 in view of heavy rains in the State. Mr. Rao reviewed the situation, the measures taken so far and the precautionary steps being taken with Ministers, Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar and other senior officials at a high-level meeting at Pragathi Bhavan, Mr. Rao's official residence complex-cum-camp office, said an official release. |
